When photographing young children, there is often a temptation to jump in and get the shots before they move on or the moment is gone. But it is sometimes better to just lower the lens, step back and watch your subject reveal a whole new side. This requires patience, but the results will speak for themselves.

Last week I was commissioned to do a job in Upper Plenty, a region devastated in the Black Saturday bush fires. It was a completely sobering experience driving into the once a beautiful landscape, but which now can aptly be described as a disaster zone. There, I met a young family who have lost everything except the most important thing and that is each other. With a new baby in their arms, and the forest already starting to renew itself, it was good to note that life prevails.
